In this post, we detail what you need to know about the Rawlings Heart of the Hide PRONP5PRO, a limited edition glove that features a pattern built for 3B, a classic colorway, and a special kind of leather that has finally made a comeback into Rawlings’ lineup.
The NP5 pattern is an 11.75” with an I-web (in this case) that best fits at third base. Although it seems like the consensus is that third basemen need something with a deep pocket, but the NP5 defies that– it has a flat and shallow pocket that plays shallower than a good amount of 11.5” gloves. One more note about the NP5 pattern: it has a natural thumb-to-ring finger close along a slanted heel (as opposed to the squared-off heel of the 200 pattern).
That said, the NP5 pattern does give some leeway to allow you to deepen the pocket to a certain point, which seemed to be squeezing the glove around the ball for the gloves I saw and inquired about.
Horween Leather – Finally!
After a prolonged hiatus from Rawlings’ lineup, Horween leather is finally back on gloves like the Rawlings Heart of the Hide PRONP5PRO and the Rawlings Heart of the Hide PROTT2.
This is good news in our eyes – getting back a leather that was known for its high quality and its standing as some of the best leather a baseball glove can have. Although this Horween on the Rawlings Heart of the Hide PRONP5PRO is of the newer oiled type (which is more flexible than the older dry Horween), you are still getting amazing durability from this prestigious leather.
In the case of the Rawlings Heart of the Hide PRONP5PRO, you can certainly expect something that is a little firmer and stiffer out of the box (as compared to other Heart of the Hide models), but will most likely exceed the other models in longevity.
As is usually expected out of gloves with Horween leather, the Rawlings Heart of the Hide PRONP5PRO features a simple colorway – the Tan Horween leather color, dark tan lacing, and gray split welting.
As you can sort of see above, the darker tannish leather color of this glove when new is amazing, especially with the contrasting gray split welting and red embroidery. However, the Rawlings Heart of the Hide PRONP5PRO looks even better with some use, as the tan color becomes slightly darker and becomes even harder to dislike.
Based on the above information, we recommend the Rawlings Heart of the Hide PRONP5PRO for third basemen who want a glove that combines a shallower pocket with a classic colorway and a top-notch leather that provides excellent durability.
